A Note to Self

When it comes to concerts, it is about who is there, not who is not there. It´s about who makes the effort to want to come and be part of an experience. That´s who you play for. For who is right there in front of you, and besides that the Godhead you faintly fathom at times.

When it comes to touring, it is about joy and validation. It´s not about what you have or haven´t achieved. Its about being in the present moment and doing your damdest to express everything you´ve every lived and felt and loved in that moment.

When it comes to the road, it is about going down it and having the courage to not look back. There is a time for regret. But its in the past, and I said goodbye to it sometime ago.

When it comes to the destination, its about strength. About unpacking gear, about preparation, about focus.

When it comes to the stage, it is a short pause, a catch breathe. Getting on to it. Then allowing yourself to be at home for the time you have there. And enjoying the house you have constructed.

When it comes to rock n roll, its about rock n roll.

When it comes to moving on, it´s about letting yourself.

When it comes to success and failure, they´re just illusion that walk hand in hand freaking each other out.

When it comes to home, it is about gratitude.

Frantically editing the “elias” shoot trying to get a first draft done before rehearsals kick off for the tour again in the morning. Everything fantastically and wildly back to front. We seem to be planning an enormous song list befitting of the 3 album & EP back catalogue. How the hell did that happen suddenly? Funny what seems to manifest by attempting to get up in morning, dreaming vivid dreams, accepting the cyclone, and a mad zealous glee that you are after all somehow alive. Enjoying the film work very much, and grateful for the opportunities coming in. The RED camera rocks. My word, the possibilities when it comes to grading are fantastic. But then again, I love the mobility of the DSLR. I can´t help it, I´m a DIY junkie, a punk rock pretender, a whirlwind bullshiter and hell, there are worse things to be. Things missing in life? Hmm. A porch. Watching the sun go up and down from a still position. Reading. Crazy wisdom. A quiet hefeweisen and a naughty rollie cigarette that I regret in the morning. But for now, gleefully caught up in the swirl after coming of the board….and wondering where the tide will choose to dump me…..

The plan with the “Album Story” is to do it in 2 halves. The winter part finished with a shoot with electro guru´s “Dirty and Twisted” in Holz Kohlen recently. It was a good day for a hefeweisen, some twisted tunes and a bloody good chat. I´ve formed a great relationship with these guys after they produced the “One Story One Song” campaign with me. It was great to work with them because they are mainly focused on electro - so a fascinating experience for me. Anyway, the second part of the album story will - i hope - begin after the tour. I have no idea what artists will be involved, but I hope that it will be sunny. Thank you to all the wonderful artists involved so far - The Tunes, Dance on the Tightrope, Martin and James, Manors, Dirty and Twisted and Elias. Please check out this page:

Life´s taken a strange turn and I seem to be doing more and more film work these days. I remember being inspired by my old friend Oliver Valente who showed me the Robert Rodriguez 10 minute film school. Its one of the quintessential DIY guides; a punk rock approach to how to make whatever the hell it is you need to make. Mainly though, just to produce things is expensive and i´ve just had to learn along the way. I guess learning by love of something is always the best route. Anyway I´m enjoying the process and learning more all the time, and it´s just a pleasant surprise for something to come in with not so much effort. In music you have to bust a gut for every yard you make, and then some. This video i shot for my great friend Ben Barritt, who wrote this wonderful song “Westbound”. We thought that a “one shot” approach would work to reflect the theme of the London Underground, new love and the feel of motion. Ultimately its just a pleasure to capture very talented people in their zone - especially guys like this.

I´m really glad to be having the record release show in Magnet tomorrow. We discussed a lot of different options and venues, but what I wanted to do most of all was to play an intimate rock n roll show. I used to live opposite the old Magnet on Greifswalder Str….oh my those days….and the first time I played there (while still in Myriad Creatures) it felt like my musical journey was developing in Berlin. It´s just the classic rock n roll venue - it has that decadent charm, that realism, that sense of “oh man is my life ever going to evolve out of these places!” I guess life has to a degree evolved, but last year I found myself missing playing rock n roll clubs when we were doing bigger support shows…its just what I know and what I love. After all the gigging last year I think my favorite show was the Berlin home coming at White Trash when we played Snow White´s night. It was 2 o´clock, the crowd was rowdy, drunk, angry, dancing, sweating, out of its mind, and you know, it was just beautiful in its lost irrelevant gracious way. Anyway - tomorrow we are playing a hell of a lot of new songs - in fact the whole of the new album. There´s a lot of new sounds and gear, and it just feels really fresh and vital. I´m really looking forward to it. It´s going to be a rock n roll night. And that for me, for what its worth, remains what its all about - for better or worse.
